 9/11 Remembrance

The following speech was read by Mayor Newhard at the September 11, 2025, Memorial Service in Veterans Memorial Park –

Friends, Neighbors, Invited Guests,

Today we reflect on an event that changed the course of history. The morning of September 11th, 2001, is seared into the American psyche as a physical attack on our soil and the great loss of innocent lives. The effect is felt even today, a loss of this magnitude changes lives.

The event happened at the very tip of Manhattan but was shared immediately into our living rooms and offices. The drama unfolded before our eyes to our shock and disbelief, and for that we are not only connected but scarred. As a witness to an atrocity, it remains with us.

Healing takes many forms and is part of why we are here today. It is for that reason that we gather every year, and that is why this monument, and the 9/11 Sculpture Garden, were constructed through incredible community effort. This remarkable and beautiful monument was designed by David Brandt, who passed away this year. Dave was a man of talent and vision, and this memorial remains a testament to the emotion and love we share. It is why the Warwick Valley Gardeners ensure that the plantings are beautiful and well-tended, why their dedicated team advocated for new plantings and a flagpole, and why the Public Works Department has made sure everything is in its place.

Today we remember those that we have lost and especially the eight members of our community. We send our love to their families. Their strength in the face of loss and grief is a testament of enduring love.

We also honor the scores of emergency service providers who offered their assistance at Ground Zero despite imminent health risks – it was a calling of patriotism and bravery.

To be here together is meaningful, as it represents our solidarity, our love, and hope for the future. It also speaks of commitment to the values that are our core. From adversity grows strength.

Thank you to the Warwick Fire Department and the American Legion, who have made sure that this remembrance remains a part of our lives. Through these actions and words, we venerate great loss and a profound moment in time. We are grateful for your lasting commitment, your service to our community.
